Morgan Belli of the Gahanna Lincoln High School girls swimming and diving team wasn’t satisfied with the way she performed in the Division I district meet Feb. 18 at Ohio State, even though she swam well enough to qualify for the state meet in both of her individual events.

The sophomore placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 5.2 seconds behind Upper Arlington’s Lauren Comer (2:00.48) and finished fourth (57.3) in the 100 backstroke behind Comer (55.66), Watterson’s Michele Rielly (55.77) and Watterson’s Camey Rabold (55.86).

The top two finishers in each swimming event at district automatically qualified for the state meet Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25, at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths were awarded for each swimming event based on district times statewide.

The top three finishers in boys diving and top four finishers in girls diving also advanced to state.

“This week, we don’t have school (Feb. 20 or Feb. 21), so that will be a good opportunity to rest and focus on the upcoming weekend,” coach Erin Darrah said. “On Friday, it will be important for (Belli) to have good prelim swims to set up for finals. She’s done this before and she’s a fierce competitor, so she knows what she needs to do to get the job done.”

Last year, Gahanna scored 30 points at state to finish 20th behind champion UA (286), as Belli placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:04.65) and 100 back (56.21).

As Belli begins her full taper, she is aiming for a top-three finish in both events. Darrah believes her state experience will give her an edge this season. Belli is seeded sixth in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 back.

“With a big meet like this, it’s always easier the second time around,” Darrah said. “You know what to expect and how it works. Morgan does have some experience with bigger meets, so I think she’ll handle it well.”

Belli is the Lions’ lone state qualifier for the second consecutive season.

Gahanna scored 56 points at district to place 13th behind champion UA (522) as 27 teams scored.

Maddie Rapp placed 11th (339.7) in diving, and Belli, sophomore Annie Devaney, junior Allison Mason and sophomore Kirstyn Thomas finished 12th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.62.

•The boys team scored 13 points at district to place 22nd behind champion UA (435) as 26 teams scored.

Dillon Wagoner placed seventh (398.1) in diving to miss qualifying for state for the second consecutive season by four positions.

Chris Chang finished 16th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.33 and Josh Vandervort, Chang, Beau Snoad and Jon Chang finished 17th in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.72.

“All of our boys finished with their best times,” assistant coach Josh Buergel said. “Jon Chang finally broke a minute in the 100 back (placing 25th in 59.71). Chris Chang swam real well as a senior, and it was important for him to finish on a high note as a senior.”

City and business leaders are about to welcome Strathmore Development Co., a Michigan-based company poised to become the new Creekside owner about a year after it went into foreclosure.

Court-appointed receiver Ohio Equities LLC filed a motion in Franklin County Common Pleas Court last week, recommending that the court approve the $10.5-million sale of the three-building, 360,000-square-foot project to the East Lansing-based Strathmore.

The pending sale, requiring court approval, would give Strathmore ownership of three buildings on the site.

The $60-million mixed-use development includes 71 upscale condominiums, only 11 of which have been sold.

Creekside Park, the plaza and the garage are owned by the city and are not part of the deal, said Brian Hoyt, the city’s public-information manager.

“The city’s investment is sound,” Hoyt said. “We are excited that the process is moving forward and look forward to working with the new owners of the Creekside development.”

Amy Evans, director of the Olde Gahanna Community Partnership, told ThisWeek that local businesses and groups are excited about a new Creekside owner.

“This is our backyard, and it’s more than a development project; it’s a big part of our community,” she said. “So we want to welcome them as a new business, but we primarily want to welcome them as new neighbors. And we look forward to meeting the new tenants they bring to our neighborhood.”

Evans said it has been nerve-racking to see vacant space after vacant space and hear that people have been interested in the spaces, but that it’s all waiting on the new ownership.

“We hope there may now be someone proactively looking to fill those spaces,” she said. “The current businesses in Olde Gahanna have worked so hard over the past few years. It will be nice to inject some more energy and excitement into the area.”

Alleging a default of more than $30 million worth of loans on the Creekside property, lender Huntington Bank in late February 2011 filed suit against Columbus development firm Stonehenge Co. and its affiliate, Gahanna-Creekside Investments LLC.

Huntington agreed to advance funds to Mark S. Froehlich, director of asset restructuring services for Ohio Equities, as the court-appointed receiver in the foreclosure proceeding.

The three privately owned portions of the project were put up for bid in late June, leading to nine serious offers, Froehlich said.

Four of the offers were from local entities, and five were from outside central Ohio, according to court documents. Seven of the nine submitted best and final offers by July 11.

The purchase price of $10.5 million is $1.5 million more than the next-highest offer of the seven, according to documents.

Froehlich told ThisWeek his main goal is to get the best price possible and to get the deal completed expeditiously for the benefit of the community.

According to Strathmore’s website, the development company is involved in all aspects of both commercial and residential projects and has completed several complex brownfield redevelopments, retail and office centers, residential communities and historic renovations.

In addition to its base in Michigan, Strathmore also has an office in Fort Myers, Fla. Its current development projects are in various Michigan and Florida locations.

Gahanna Mayor Becky Stinchcomb said she’s looking forward to working with the new Creekside owner, saying Strathmore would bring new funding, energy and retailers to the area.

“I will encourage the new owners to also work hard with the existing tenants to establish new leases and create the critical mass of businesses needed to truly make Creekside a destination location, as was originally planned,” she said.

Stinchcomb said the new owner has said he plans to complete not only the unfinished retail space but also all of the condos within the next year.

That would bring more permanent residents downtown and more foot traffic and would help all of the retailers there, she said.

Creekside opened in June 2008.

Situated on the 3.5 acres along the Big Walnut Creek, the 240,000-square-foot Creekside development includes 59,710 square feet of office space, 49,350 square feet of retail space and 71 luxury condominiums.

Site amenities include 10,000 square feet of public plaza, seven ornate water features, a conference and events center with a 6,000-square-foot ballroom, a public park with waterfront access and a below-street-level lagoon.

The development included a $45-million private-sector investment and $16.7-million public-sector contribution.

Goshen Lane Elementary School second-graders doled out five-star ratings to their favorite places around town while learning to back up their opinions with solid facts and details.

Teacher Angie Buchert said her students read online reviews of restaurants and other businesses and talked about what makes a good review.

“We quickly saw that the best reviews were the ones that told us details about why a place was so good or bad,” she said. “We then talked about personal experience being the key to a quality review. Students chose places that they had a strong opinion about and had been often enough with their families to write an informed review.”

Aidan wrote about Gahanna Lanes.

“Every Tuesday I go bowling at Gahanna Lanes,” he wrote. “Gahanna Lanes is a fun place. I would give them five stars. They have two prize machines and they have Mario there, too. You can get necklaces and glowing skulls. They also have friendly workers. If the ball gets stuck, they help you. The first time I played, they helped me. At the end of bowling, we have a party. We eat pizza and have pop or water. They have three big screens … That’s why Gahanna Lanes is a five-star place.”

Adrianna wrote compelling copy for Zoombezi Bay.

“Hi! Welcome to Zoombezi Bay! Zoombezi Bay is a really fun place for you! The rides are fun,” she wrote. “One reason Zoombezi Bay is a five-star place is because they have lots of slides. You get poured by a giant bucket, too. It is really fun! Another reason Zoombezi Bay is a five-star place is because of the wave pool. The wave pool makes big waves when they blow the whistle. The whistle is really loud.”

Ra’Yana and Jayla collaborated on their review of Skate Zone 71, calling it “a skating rink for all ages.”

“You can play games, laser tag, hang around and eat pizza, or just skate,” the girls wrote. “It is lots and lots of fun. So much better than any other skating rink. You have multiple choices of food and drink. You can eat pizza, chicken wings, Icees, cotton candy, sherbet, pretzels, cake and cupcakes and lots and lots of different kinds of pop and juice. They also have lots of songs like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Niki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, Willow Smith, Beyonce … They have lots of games. They have more than 12 games. Pretty awesome, isn’t it?”

Chayni praised a popular vacation spot.

“Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, is the best amusement park in the universe … The workers are friendly, it’s clean most of the time, the price is expensive but it’s worth it!” she wrote. “Also you can get express passes for the rides but they don’t work for Harry Potter, which is really messed up because it has the longest line … Always go to the restaurant at Jurassic Park no matter where you are at because it has better food. But don’t drink there. Save your thirst for butter beer at Harry Potter. It’s the best!”

Nicholas reviewed the Chiller.

“The Chiller is a five-star place because you can play hockey and skate,” he wrote. “Some of the staff are nice. When you take lessons the staff are nice. They show you how to stop on ice. They show you how to go backwards. The snack bar staff are nice because we are nice to them. They smile and say ‘What do you want?’ You can get little cheeseburgers.”

Buchert said the students branched out to reviewing movies and books, posting reviews on Internet sites such as Yelp.

“The students were very motivated about their work,” she said. “The more we talked about the purpose of a review, the more they wanted their reviews to be helpful to others in their community. They realized the importance of accuracy and honesty in their work.”

Buchert said students learned one of the mandates of the new common core graded source of study: to be able to express an opinion and back it up with evidence.

			                	The Columbus Dispatch

			                Tuesday February 21, 2012 5:28 AM

The main draw of a Gahanna subdivision — a scenic creek — has become its greatest danger,
threatening trees, fences and backyards.

The banks of Souder Ditch are eroding as its flow increases, and city officials want to fix it
before it causes any more damage. That could cost local taxpayers $250,000 if the city doesn’t get
a state grant.

Residents “are finding what they thought was a gentle, meandering brook through their backyards
is suddenly a raging torrent of water,” said City Engineer Karl Wetherholt.

From Christie Nickell’s deck 10 yards from the creek, the water runs so loudly that it can be
heard over the telephone.

“It’s beautiful back here. It’s so nice,” Nickell said. “It’s exactly the reason why we moved
here.”

But that was 12 years ago. Back then, the 3-foot-wide stream dried to a trickle during the
summer. These days, it’s twice as wide and runs year-round, taking down trees and pushing debris
through the subdivision during heavy rain.

The Nickells have lost four trees. They paid $30,000 to put up a retaining wall, although it has
helped only on one side. The erosion has created sewer problems, exposed an underground power line
and is eating away at a century-old bridge. In one of the worst instances, there’s a 20-foot drop
from a home’s backyard to the creek.

In all, Wetherholt thinks the erosion area directly affects about a dozen or so homes between
Ashley Court and Farm Creek Drive.

The stream, a tributary of Rocky Fork Creek, has moved faster over the years because of runoff
from developments north in Jefferson Township. Also, homeowners in the subdivision mow their lawns
all the way to the creek instead of allowing room for natural plant life along the banks that could
slow storm runoff.

“It would’ve been very difficult for people to predict this, especially if they bought the house
and moved in during drought conditions, which occurred in the early 1990s,” Wetherholt said. The
city is applying for a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to help pay for a
detention basin in Gahanna Woods, which should cut down the stream’s flow by about 30 percent. In
all, officials expect it to cost $250,000, which includes a multipond wetland and walking
trails.

The city will go ahead with the plans even if it doesn’t get the state money, Wetherholt said.
The city also is paying more than $52,000 for a study to determine how much erosion has occurred,
how bad the damage could get and what can be done to stop it permanently.

Meanwhile, Nickell and other residents have been fighting development efforts that could add
even more water to their creek. A developer who wanted to build homes upstream on Havens Corners
Road recently withdrew his application after protests.

“We’re trying to find a way that everybody can be happy,” Nickell said. “They can still develop,
but as long as they’re not devaluing our property.”

Gahanna Lincoln swimmer Morgan Belli is going back to the state meet this week.

But the sophomore wasn’t exactly beaming after she qualified for another Canton trip at the Division I district meet Saturday, Feb. 18, at Ohio State University’s McCorkle Aquatic Center.

She automatically advanced to states by virtue of her second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.20, bettering her sectional clocking of 2:11.60.

Belli was beaten by Upper Arlington’s Lauren Comer, who set a district meet record of 2:00.48.

Belli is seeded sixth in the IM for the state meet.

In her other individual district event, Belli was fourth in the 100 backstroke at 57.30 – still an improvement over her 1:00.21 at sectionals.

The top two individuals at districts in each swim event automatically reached the state meet, but Belli received one of the 16 at-large state spots in the backstroke, based on times from the other three districts.

She is seeded No. 10 in the back for states.

But the Golden Lion had hoped for better at OSU.

“Actually I wasn’t real that happy with it, but hopefully (this) week will be better and I’ll be happy with those (results),” said Belli.

“I thought I was going to go a lot faster. I felt good in warmups, and during my (IM) race, I didn’t feel very good. I just didn’t feel like I had the speed that I wanted, and I really wasn’t happy with my time. The backstroke hurt really bad. I thought my time was going to be a lot slower than it was.

“But, oh well.”

Lincoln assistant coach Josh Buergel understood Belli’s frustration.

“You’ll get that when you have a world-class athlete like that,” he said. “They put a lot of pressure on themselves.”

Belli accounted for 32 of Gahanna’s 56 team points for 13th place in the district girls meet.

The 200 freestyle relay was 12th (1:44.62) for 10 points, with the team of Belli, sophomore Annie Devaney, junior Allison Mason and sophomore Kirstyn Thomas.

The 200 medley relay, with Mason, Thomas, Belli and Devaney, came in 13th (1:55.23) for eight points.

In the 1-meter diving, freshman Maddie Rapp picked up the Lions’ other six points with her 11th place (339.70).

The Gahanna boys were 22nd at the district with 13 points, with 12 contributed by senior diver Dillon Wagoner, who took seventh place (398.10).

The other point came from senior Chris Chang, who was 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.33).

D-I state preliminary races will be held Friday, Feb. 24, with finals conducted Saturday, Feb. 25, at Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium.

“I want to place higher than I did last year,” Belli said. “I was fourth last year in both of my events, so hopefully this year I’ll get at least third.”

Wrestling

Gahanna qualified two wrestlers to the D-I district meet, which will be conducted Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25, at Hilliard Darby.

At the Pickerington Central sectional Feb. 18, where the top four finishers in each weight class moved on, junior Drew McDougle (40-5) won the 132-pound title by pinning Teays Valley’s Cole Nace (4:53) in the title match.

Junior Kasee McDougle (32-9) was second at 138, after losing the finals match by forfeit to Olentangy Liberty’s Jake Ryan.

In other sectional results, sophomore Mike McMasters (11-19) was fifth at 126, and both junior Collin Blaney (182, 18-15) and sophomore Sheldon Rentmeester (220, 5-14) finished sixth.

The team was seventh in the sectional standings with 68 points.

The sixth-seeded Lions were to play Liberty in a second-round D-I Central District tournament game Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Hilliard Davidson, after pummeling Canal Winchester 74-32 in the first round Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Davidson.

Tuesday’s winner heads to the district semifinals March 1 at Davidson (6 p.m.) to face No. 5 Dublin Coffman or Watkins Memorial.

The game with Winchester was pretty much decided in the first period, where Gahanna (15-6) outscored the Indians (5-16) 18-0.

The Lions got scoring from 14 players, led by Chrishna Butler (12 points), Maddison Blackwell (11) and Quiera Lampkins (10).

It was a welcome result after a rough journey through the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division, in which Lincoln finished third at 9-5 behind state-ranked Reynoldsburg and Pickerington North.

“We came into the season wanting to compete in the league, and we didn’t,” said coach Rick Hauser. “(Now) we want to win a district (championship).

” ‘You get a whole new life now (in the tournament),’ that’s what I’m talking to them about. I’m hoping they know these things we’ve been trying to get them to do all season, they’ll do.”

City officials are examining and investigating the possibility of creating a downtown Livonia.

City Council members are expected to travel to Gahanna, Ohio, a suburb with 33,000 residents located east of Columbus, to view a downtown, mixed-use, high-density area. Gahanna’s Creekside development features 71 luxury condominiums, 100,000 square feet of commercial space in three separate buildings and other amenities.

The idea is nothing more than a concept at this point, according to Joe Laura, who chairs the council’s Economic Development, Community Outreach and Strategic Planning Committee. The committee, which includes council members Maureen Miller Brosnan and Brandon Kritzman, discussed the concept Wednesday night, with Mayor Jack Kirksey and officials from OHM, a Livonia firm of engineers, architects and planners, along with some residents.

No location discussed

There was no discussion that evening on where the downtown would be located.

Laura said he scheduled the discussion for a committee meeting after speaking with Kritzman a month ago and with Councilman John Pastor, who also has expressed an interest in creating a downtown. Internet discussions and speculation about a downtown spurred Laura to schedule the discussion in committee, Laura said. That Internet discussion has focused on the Five Mile and Farmington Road area as a potential site, but the committee did not discuss a location at this time.

“We want to go down as council members to a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, and what’s been done there in terms of economic development,” Laura said. The trip is expected to be a day trip with all seven council members, paid for by council members out of their own pocket, according to Council President Laura Toy.

Throughout the evening, Joe Laura tempered expectations, stating that the idea was “only a concept” right now. He wanted to eventually develop a business plan and see whether the idea was even feasible for the city. “Either you have something or you don’t,” Laura said.

Kritzman said the project isn’t something that is accomplished overnight. “We need to start out with what our expectations are before talking about a business plan or property,” Kritzman said.

‘Changing demographic’

John Hiltz, president of OHM, said there was a lot of opportunity for high-density, mixed-use development in Livonia. “The city may be interested in a partnership (with a private developer) if it results in a positive impact for the city,” Hiltz said. Such a development could help with values of homes, Hiltz said.

“We have a changing demographic,” Hiltz said. “The vision and strategy will continue to change.”

Kirksey told the committee he supports the concept. He said later that he endorsed the idea, and welcomes the discussion about it, but has reservations about the costs.

Brosnan asked what steps needed to be taken. Jim Houk, planner with OHM, said surveys and meetings with business and other citizen groups gathered input in Gahanna before developing and building Creekside.

Communities need to look at other competing communities and what attracts new residents, Houk said. “With the changing demographics, every community is in competition to bring in new residents,” Houk said.

Houk said Gahanna’s development cost $55 million. The city offset a part of its portion of the cost through a Tax Increment Finance plan and other means such as a parking garage, Houk said.

A vision and a plan can help bring developers to the table. “What is the vision of the community and is it enough to support the investment made by the company?” Houk asked.

Home values impacted

In response to a question from Councilman Tom Robinson on what the return on investment could be for residents, Houk said housing values jumped 10 percent in Gahanna because of the community’s walkability to the new development.

A steering committee was established and three open meetings were scheduled to talk with residents and businesses about the impact of the development before Gahanna proceeded, Houk said.

Houk said economic development was changing in the communities he was working with. “Economic Development departments would go out and we’d find ourselves in bidding wars with three or four other communities,” Houk said. “You are getting into a changing environment from a business standpoint. They are less concerned about that and more concerned about attracting talent,”

Developing a city plan and vision will help. “If you have a desirable city to live in, the business will follow the people,” Houk said.

Employees are not following the jobs, Houk said. “It’s now ‘I will choose where I want to live,’ and businesses are reacting to that,” Houk said.

Livonia resident Bill Joyner thanked the council and the committee for looking at the idea. He believes that evening’s meeting might be the start of redefining Livonia for the next 20, 50 or 100 years. “I’m glad you took the first step,” Joyner said.

Steve King, a former school board member, said he hoped the council would take the idea and “run with it and at least find out if the community is interested.”

Laura expects that the location of the site would be discussed at a later date, and added that “it might be multiple locations.”

“I expect we’ll do something within 90 days after we take our trip there (to Gahanna). We just want to see how feasible it is.”

Costs a concern

On Thursday, Kirksey said he endorsed looking at any potential downtown, and added it could be a “great thing,” but is concerned about potential costs and doesn’t want to support any proposal with significant costs.

The city was created from old farmland for homes and businesses, but no downtown was created, so creating one may require demolition and relocating businesses. “Industry and schools were taking shape without anything in the master plan,” Kirksey said.

Kirksey believes it would be “physically impossible” to replicate a downtown Plymouth or Northville without expensive costs.

Kirksey believes the 2013 budget will be “a nightmare” and the city may have to look at eliminating services.

“The whole definition of a downtown is currently in people’s minds,” he said. With nothing on the boards, no planning money or grant money, there are no funds set aside to create a downtown, Kirksey said.

But he added that he supported the visioning aspect. “It would be something that OHM and Brandon Kritzman are talking about, a high density use with retail and condos above the stores.”

Kirksey also said any rumors about the city discussing purchasing or exchanging property with the school district were just that – rumors. “It’s an unfortunate byproduct of people just talking that led up to last night’s meeting,” he said.

Kirksey said he would not comment on where he thinks a downtown should be built if the city decided to proceed with one because “it would only lead to unfounded rumors.”

The news quickly spread through Gahanna’s Creekside yesterday: The development, which has been
in receivership for about a year, has found a buyer.

Michigan-based Strathmore Development Co. is expected to pay $10.5 million for the group of
offices, shops and condos. The receiver, Mark Froehlich of NAI Ohio Equities, filed a motion in
Franklin County Common Pleas Court on Thursday recommending approval.

The prospect of the sale brought with it hope — and questions.

“I just heard,” said Sara Knight, whose Studio K photography shop is located in the development.
“I’m not sure what will happen, but I hope they keep the leases how they are and the people
struggling will be able to renegotiate.”

Over at Golden Nails Salon, the hope was for more tenants and foot traffic — and
spring.

“It’s been really quiet, especially in January and February,” said manager Sophie Phok. “We need
more people.”

The $60 million Creekside project includes three buildings totaling 360,000 square feet. It was
developed by Gahanna-based Stonehenge Co. and officially opened in early 2008. It includes a large
plaza with a fountain and view of Big Walnut Creek, and 69 upscale condominiums, only 11 of which
have been sold.

“The residential portion of the project is expected to be completed in approximately six months”
after the sale becomes final, Strathmore president Scott Chappelle said in a statement.

Creekside went into receivership in early 2011 after Stonehenge defaulted on a $30 million
mortgage held by Huntington Bank.

“They were a victim of terrible timing,” said Mike Simpson of NAI Ohio Equities, which conducted
the sale and manages the property. “It was a well-conceived project at the wrong time.”

Simpson said about 80 percent of the office and retail space is leased. The Bread Basket Family
Bakery and Buck Mulligan’s restaurant have closed in recent months.

There were nine bidders for Creekside, Simpson said, which was about twice as many as he
expected.

“I think it was because it’s new construction and well-located,” he said.

Stonehenge president Mo Dioun also said the bad economy — especially in the housing market — led
to the project’s downfall.

“I’m very excited about the sale and think it is indicative the economy is finally picking up,”
Dioun said. “I’m delighted, and hope this is a new beginning and the project will move forward and
show its true potential.”

Stonehenge and Huntington have the right to challenge the sale in court.

“I don’t know about that. That’s something I will have to talk to my lawyers about,” Dioun
said.

Huntington officials declined to comment.

Chappelle said Creekside is a sound investment for his company.

“The city did a courageous thing to redevelop the downtown area and the developer did an amazing
job,” he said. “But the timing was just bad, and now we are seeing things getting better and we
want to be part of that.”

Kandace Watkins said there has been a buzz in recent days about the potential purchase.

She is executive director of C Suites, an executive-office-space company that leases the entire
third floor of one of Creekside’s buildings. Watkins in turn leases space and provides services to
about 30 small-business clients.

Creekside went into receivership about a year after she moved in.

“It has been a struggle,” Watkins said. “But I’m optimistic the synergies between the shops
downstairs and the offices above will feed off of each other and brighter days are ahead.”

The lobby of the Residences of Creekside in Gahanna, photographed in 2009. The $60 million development includes 69 upscale condominiums, only 11 of which have been sold.

A buyer has been found for the Gahanna Creekside waterfront development that combines commercial
and retail space and residential units – and is currently in receivership.

The receiver filed a motion in Franklin County Common Pleas Court yesterday, recommending the
court approve the $10.5 millions sale of the three-building, 360,000-square-foot project to
Michigan-based Strathmore Development Company.

The sale must still be approved by the court.

The $60 million development includes 69 upscale condominiums, only 11 of which have been
sold.

“The residential portion of the project is expected to be completed in approximately six
months after closing,” said Scott Chappelle, president of Strathmore in a statement.

The land on which two of the three buildings sit is owned by Gahanna, and leased to the
property owner.

“We’re excited the process is moving forward and we’re looking forward to working with the
new owner,” said Gahanna spokesman Brian Hoyt.

Creekside was developed by Stonehenge Co. and opened in 2008.

“They were a victim of terrible timing,” said Mike Simpson of NAI Ohio Equities, which
conducted the sale and manages the property. “It was a well-conceived project at the wrong
time.”

In preparation for its postseason opener, the Delaware Christian School girls basketball team has been put through coach Jackie Boggs’ version of basic training since the end of the regular season Feb. 11.

The Eagles hope the workouts will pay dividends when they face seventh-seeded Fisher Catholic in the second round of the Division IV district tournament at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Westerville Central.

“The last time we had this much time off was around the holidays when we lost three straight games,” said Boggs, whose team has a first-round bye. “This time, I’m bringing in extra bodies and the starters are going full court against 10 defenders. We’re working hard on conditioning and on staying sharp with basketball fundamentals.”

Delaware Christian played three games between Dec. 10 and Jan. 6, and the three-game losing streak leveled the Eagles’ record to 4-4 at that time. The Eagles, who are seeded ninth, finished the regular season 13-7.

Fisher Catholic is 11-9 and finished 7-7 in the MSL-Cardinal Division. The contest is a rematch of last year’s second-round game in which the seventh-seeded Eagles beat the eighth-seeded Irish 49-45 before losing to top-seeded Harvest Prep 70-42.

“They shoot a lot of 3s but are a little more physical than when we played them last season,” Boggs said. “I’ve been told they don’t handle pressure well this season. We’ll probably start in a 3-2 zone defense to defend the perimeter, and we’re working hard at really boxing out from that. We also want to push the ball up the floor to get them in foul trouble or get some easy looks.”

The winner will play Marion Catholic, Northside Christian or fifth-seeded Worthington Christian in district semifinal at 6 p.m. Feb. 29 at Westerville Central.

Delaware Christian, which has won four in a row, defeated Marion Catholic 79-40 on Feb. 9 as Haley Kirby scored 35 points.

Kirby set the program’s career scoring record in a 56-34 victory over Madison Christian on Feb. 3. She has 1,222 career points.

“Before the Marion Catholic game, her career high in a game was 31,” Boggs said. “I’ve teased her about that for a while, because my career game was 33 points at Hudson (N.Y.) High School. I told her if she ever reached 32, I would pull her out. So when she had 32 against Marion Catholic, I sent someone to the scorer’s table as a joke. She yelled over and said she wasn’t coming out of the game. She drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.”

Brenna McCullough had 16 points against Marion Catholic and a career-high 28 in an 85-25 win Feb. 11 against Patriot Academy. Boggs also said she has been pleased with the recent play of Sarah Harp, Emily Kirkham and Katie Morgan.

“Sarah had 14 points, 16 assists and 13 steals against Patriot, and that was fun because it was senior night and she has always taken a back seat to Haley in stats but had a tremendous game,” Boggs said. “She also had 10 assists and 10 steals against Marion Catholic.

“Emily Kirkham has really turned it on as well and Katie Morgan is playing real well keeping the turnovers low and getting the ball to open people.”

The Eagles finished fourth in the MOCAL at 6-6, behind Tree of Life (12-0), Fairfield Christian (9-3) and Gahanna Christian (7-5) and ahead of Grove City Christian (4-8), Granville Christian (3-9) and Madison Christian (1-11).

•The boys basketball team opens the Division IV district tournament against Gahanna Christian in the second round at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Granville.

The Eagles won both meetings in MOCAL play, 64-60 on Dec. 13 and 61-58 on Jan. 21.

“They were two tight games,” coach Matt Moore said. “They shoot it well. In the first game, Keegan Parsons, a 6-foot-7 wing or small forward, had 16 points at halftime and finished with 27. … In the second game, Jeffrey Copley and MacGregor Roberts defended him and limited him to six points. He was frustrated.

“We’ll have to stop him because he’s the focal part of their offense. They made eight 3s in the second meeting, four by Caleb McLaughlin, so we’ll have to try to deny things on the perimeter as well and then keep Parsons off the boards.”

Delaware Christian, which was 13-6 overall before closing the regular season Feb. 17 against Shekinah Christian, is seeded ninth. Gahanna Christian, which was 10-9 overall, is seeded 10th.

The Eagles finished 7-5 in the MOCAL to tie Gahanna Christian for third behind Fairfield Christian (12-0) and Tree of Life (9-3).
